plans to send hundreds to a convention in san francisco. good evening. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am gasia mikaelian. >> the postal service is bleeding money and cutting service. yet they are spending $2 million to send its top executives to a conference in san francisco. only on 2 tonight, ktvu's eric rasmussen is live in the city with more. >> reporter: this afternoon the postal service sent me this sheet saying how they could make money off of this conference next month. it calls for work shops and other meetings and a dance party, a dinner event and a golf tournament. >> the conference in march tees off with golf. the four day conference draws 4,000 people and 400 of them will be staffers of the u.s.

postal service. including the postmaster general. documents show the travel, $220,000, and others will cost $2.2 million. the hotels, $300 a night before the government discount. documents show beyond the meetings and golf there will be music, entertainment and a banquet featuring the foods of fisherman's wharf and china town. one group says they shouldn't do this. >> they need to be concerned and maybe be concerned about rationing back some of their activities. >> the post office said the conference in san francisco will make money by creating future business and new sales

crews have just retrieved the body of a hiker who died after falling off a cliff. ktvu's robert handa is live in san jose's alum rock park where the investigation continues at this hour. robert? >> we are at one of the main entrances to the park and as you can tell, you can tell what kind of terrain they have been dealing with to find and recover the body. >> reporter: search and revue inside of san jose's alum rock park, a mission to retrieve a dead hiker reported missing on saturday and found by rangers sunday afternoon. there were a few visitors today who were surprised to hear about the death. >> like a family park but i wouldn't suggest going into an area you are not supposed to. >> he fell anywhere between 130

are criticizing dianne feinstein's weapons ban. she wants to ban buying and selling of 150 fire arms. more than 2,000 others models would be exemp. some are questioning that saying some of the fire arms can cause just as much damage as the banned ones. dianne feinstein said it was designed to make it clear the bill wouldn't effect hunting and sporting weapons. aurora colorado last july, the house passed new ammunition limits and expanded background checks. colorado republicans oppose the measure saying they restrict rights and won't prevent mass shootings. san francisco a&b singer put on a concert to draw attention to gun violence following the school shooting in connecticut.

half to remove the tree. one of two people injured in a boat accident this weekend died from his injuries. ktvu's allie rasmus is here with more. >> reporter: one of the central questions to the investigation is figuring out who may have been at fault for this fatal collision. it happened saturday afternoon in front of a body of water known as raccoon straight. >> reporter: on saturday afternoon many people on it peninsula saw the after math of the collision before a golden gate ferry and a motor boat. >> it was crunched in the front. the windshield was broken and so the -- looked like the ferry boat came over the boat. >> the boat driver aand passenger were rushed to the doc -- and passenger were rushed to the dock.

administrative -- captain is on administrative leave. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. we have new information on the teen who was found dead in south lake tahoe last month. alyssa byrne died of probable hypothermia and there was evidence of methamphetamine and drugs in her system. the teen disappeared new year's eve after sundaying a music festful. december festville -- festival. foils received -- officials received reports of illegal gambling going on at three locations and they sent letters to the businesses telling them to shut down operations. one of the three closed. the city counsel will consider a moratorium tomorrow night to give them time to look at recommendations. jerry buss died today.

he passed away before 6:00 a.m. this morning in los angeles. the 80-year-old had been battling cancer but the immediate cause of death was kidney failure. he bought the lakers in 1979 and they won 10 nba championships, five titles in 9 years. >> branded the lakers as we all know. >> jerry buss' son and daughter will run the deem. jerry buss has a star on the hollywood walk of fame. those who knew jerry buss are reacting on twitter. magic johnson wrote, i was 19 when i first met jerry buss,.

gas prices are going through the roof. they have gone up every day for the past month because of rising oil prices prices and refinery closings. ktvu's paul chambers shows us how it could pay to shop around. paul? >> reporter: this safeway isn't the cheapest but look at the line, it has been wrapped around since 1:00 p.m., very consistent. look across the street at that chevron, 26 cents more but there is no line and no waiting. >> reporter: if you are trying to save money, you need to drive around. in contra costa county we found prices from $3.83 to $4.15 a gallon. a big chunk out of your budget. >> i am a college student. i can't afford it. 60 bucks to fill it up.

however those prices can change so check the site before you head out. live, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. in the bay area san francisco has the most expensive, the average price is $4.13. san francisco, san jose and oakland climbed 10 cents. if you want to find the least expensive gas, here is what you do, go to www.ktvu.com, click on the business tab and choose consumer from the menu. bmw is recalling 570,000 cars because the engine can stall. the problem is caused by a failed battery cable connector. cars effected include: 3-serie s sedans, wagons, convertibles and coupes from the 2007 through 2011 model years. also included are 1-series coupes and convertibles from 2008 through 2012, and the z4 sports car from 2009 through 2011. bmw says they will replace the

cable connector and secure it for free. a man is dead after crashing his suv while trying to get away from san jose police. ktvu's alex savage tells us it began after a police officer says the driver tried to run him over. >> reporter: a high-speed chase in san jose ended with this violent crash around 11:00 p.m. last night. the 20-year-old driver was killed when it went off the road near 101. >> reporter: a tow truck pulled the suv out of the ravine. san jose police said he tried to run down an officer. two teenager passers were in the suv but both girls walked away from the cash. you can see the tracks where the suv rolled down the hill and where it came to rest was feet away from several houses.

he was studying when he heard the accident. he knew it was dangerous when officers moved in right away. >> i heard him say put your hands up. i immediately locked the doors and ran inside. woke everyone up to make sure. i don't know if they will be coming through. >> reporter: police say this started when the driver of the suv tried to hit an officer who was making an unrelated traffic stop. the suv its lights off as it came towards the officer. he shined his flash light. >> i noticed the driver of the vehicle was making contact with him and he drove towards him. he avoided being hit. >> reporter: the close call led to the pursuit that reached speeds up to 100 miles per hour. it ended when the suv veered off the road. investigators will run toxicology tests on the driver hoping to understand why he aimed his suv at a police

officer. in san jose, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. police at university of california, santa cruz sent out an alert after a woman reported she was beaten and raped yesterday afternoon on campus. officers say it took place on the upper quarry amphitheater and the classroom unit buildings buildings. the 21-year-old woman said she was visiting when a man attacked her. that was at 12:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. >> i think what was unusual about this one was that the victim did not know the assailant and it happened in the middle of the day. that is shocking for the campus. police released a sketch based on the victim's description of the man who raped her. he is a white man in 20s to 30s. 5'10", 200 pounds, black hair and a mustache and goatee. a battle may be brewing

hepatitis b and c. >> reporter: we went to the home of one mother who is a registered nurse. $20 got us 6 bottles. the same about would have cost us more at the milk bank. we packed them on dry ice and took them to a lab that discovered two types of back tearious. while the mother selling the milk said she didn't drink caffeine, tests found it present. that is why they test before selling it to the public. and parents need a prescription from their doctors. the milk is pasteurized to kill bacteria. she worked 20 years and is at the public health department. >> this is really alarming. >> reporter: this revealed a bacteria that could cause a disease that could harm a baby.

readers digest filed for bankruptcy for the second time in four years. the parent company filed for chapter 11 in an effort to cut down on $465 million debt. they have been around for 91 years. but it is one of many falling on hard times as more and more people use their computers. he sells 20 copies of readers digest a month. >> most customers like to buy paper instead of online.

fire destroyed four house boats in new jersey. the fire began on one of the boats and strong winds carried the flames to the other three. no one was on board any of the boats. no reports of injuries. investigators are looking for the cause of the fire. right now danica patrick is one of the biggest names in racing and this weekend she took the poll position for the daytona 500. >> ken pritchett is live where he found several female racers
